THIRD INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON THEORETICAL PHYSICS AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (ISOTPAND2010) SUN. JULY 11--FRI. 23,2010
The First International Seminar on Theoretical Physics and National Development (ISOTPAND08) was held at the Merit House (Abuja, Nigeria) from August 25- 29, 2008. This first meeting was to pay tribute to Emeritus Professor Alexander Obiefoka Enukora Animalu who joined the prestigious `Age Club´of three scores and ten on August 28, 2008,
The success of ISOTPAND08 motivated both the organizers (ISOTPAND International Scientific Committee) and the participants to reach the decision that ISOTPAND should become an annual event and should remain a forum for bringing senior researchers and eager beginners together. Therefore, the Second International Seminar on Theoretical Physics and National Development (ISOTPAND09) which was held at the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja (Nigeria) was planned to meet this goal with the major theme: ´Mobilizing science-based enterprises´ with special focus on solar and renewable energy. The premise for this focus is that the Energy Commission of Nigeria was establish by government about 30 years ago. Since then, there have been series of conferences, seminars and workshops and their focuses have been on how government can kick start investment in the solar and renewable energy sector. However, the Nigerian Academy of Sciences after some retrospect of the journey so far, came to the realization that government may have laid the needed foundation for the scientists to take the challenge of investing in the alternative energy sector. Therefore, their new focus is on how to mobilize the scientific community to kick start the investment in solar and renewable energy driven either as public-private sector, private-private sector or their combinations. As part of this drive, a book titled `Solar and Renewable Energy Company Nigeria Limited´ was presented at a Roundtable meeting during the ISOTPAND09. This was in addition to the presentation of the biography of the late solar energy physicist and former Minister of Science and Technology, Chief (Dr) Laz Abaecheta Unaogu. The Roundtable meeting was attended by both scientists and the representatives of government agencies and the private sector. The discussion was diverse and very enriching.
Furthermore, to motivate young female physicists and physics students at ISOTPAND09, the organizers specially invited Dr Arlene P. Maclin who is a Professor of Engineering & Director of the Center for Academic Excellence at Norfolk State University (USA). She was impressed with the number of this group of participants invited by the organizers just as they were motivated by her scholarship. Also as part of motivating the female physics young researchers and students, a renowned psychologist and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the Delta State University, Abraka, Professor Otete Okobia, was invited to ISOTPAND09 to talk on the `The attitude of the female students towards physics.´
The Third International Seminar on Theoretical Physics and National Development (ISOTPAND2010) which will be held at the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja (Nigeria) is also planned to archive the goal of bringing senior researchers and eager beginners together. The focus this year is to consolidate on the drive to mobilize the scientific community to kick start science based enterprises. In addition, there will be Foundation Postgraduate Courses on Iso-mathematics and computational physics using Python.
